I was frozen to the bone when we finished my torment in the creek. Levi told me he would fix dinner while I thawed out in Derek’s bathtub. He was still looking at his hand when I left him for the bathroom. I found myself looking at mine; the cut was starting to seal, the bond still pulsing steadily.

As I changed clothes, I found myself staring at the photo of Eve and Lucas I had set against my lamp. Biting my lip, I reached for the box I had stored, the beast nudging me to do so. Before I could second-guess, I tucked the photo into the box then walked into the kitchen.

Levi was eating a pint of ice cream, watching the soup simmer, when I stepped up to the counter. I slid the box over to him. “You should have this.”

He set his carton down and reached for the box like it was a grenade. As he opened it, his mouth curved into a tired smile. He picked up the picture I had tucked in last, the one of Eve and Lucas.

“She was so beautiful,” I said, my voice quiet so as not disturb his thoughts.

He hummed in agreement, his thumb rubbing over the photo. He looked past it into the box, carefully setting it down before reaching for the other photos. “Jesus,” he said with a breathy laugh.

I leaned across the counter to see what picture he was looking at. “It was in the dresser.”

He never looked up from the photo, setting it down and moving to the next one, leaning toward me so I could see the photo of him and Lucas, both smiling next to the woodpile. “Lander used to say he was my twin. He was always following me around. He and his cousins were always getting into trouble.”

He flipped to the next photo, laughing at a picture of Lucas covered in mud, missing a few teeth. “Shadows. That’s what Chris called him and Eli. Our shadows.”

He reached for a trinket in the box, an embroidered key chain that read “Lucas Kicks Ass.” Shaking his head, he tucked it back into the box. “We had a lot of good years. For that I’m blessed.”

He looked at another picture of Eve. She was in a garden full of roses, smiling almost as if she was a blooming flower herself, red hair like fire falling in perfect curls around her and green eyes shining like two emeralds. Her skin was adorned with dozens of freckles; she had been kissed by angels.

It was Eve I dreamed about that night. We were in the garden together. She was calling me with a smile that was undeniably contagious.

I chased after her, through the sunflowers that grew taller and taller until the flowers became trees, blocking the light of the sun.

Eve stared at me as she backed into the darkness, the silence of the forest around us all too familiar to me. The trees felt like they were drawing closer to us, the ground like ice under my toes.
